- Police and military operatives reported recovering more ammunition for high-powered weapons at the compound of Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr.�s mother-in-law in Shariff Aguak last Wednesday. But was something else recovered but not declared? Sources alleged yesterday that the raiders also found, but did not declare, P120 million in cash stored in cigarette boxes.

- The Commission on Elections Second Division on Tuesday allowed former President Joseph Estrada to run in the May 2010 presidential elections. "Let the people decide who will be the next president," read the poll body's decision in junking the petition filed against Estrada last December.

-Fire raced through a slum near the main port in the Philippine capital, killing a 5-year-old girl, gutting hundreds of shanties and leaving 4,000 people homeless, an official said Sunday. There were no other reports of deaths or major injuries in the Saturday night blaze at the Baseco Compound, a crowded slum along the rim of Manila Bay, Senior Fire Officer Emmanuel Gaspar said. An Associated Press photographer at the site saw people waiting to be treated for minor injuries, including wounds from glass shards. The cause of the 2-hour fire, which was fanned by strong winds and destroyed 500 shanties, is still under investigation, Gaspar said. Fires in Manila's overcrowded slums are common, with the tight living conditions allowing flames to quickly spread through houses made of light materials.

-Six Filipinos, mostly women, remain missing after the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince was hit by earthquake on Tuesday, and plans are being readied to repatriate the more than 400 Filipinos in the disaster- prone Caribbean country, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Friday. -Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Esteban Conejos Jr. said apart from the three United Nations peacekeepers earlier reported trapped in a UN building, three other Filipinos remained unaccounted for, including two women trapped in the collapsed Caribbean Supermarket and a male UN civilian personnel
