Is Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice) a Public Holiday in the Philippined?

Eid’l Adha, one of the two greatest feasts of Islam, shall be celebrated as a regular holiday.

In the Philippines, Eidul Adha has been a public holiday since 2002.

Enshrined in law, Republic Act No. 9849 states that the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah or the twelfth month of the Islamic Calendar, is hereby declared as a national holiday for the observance of Eidul Adha.

What is Is Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha, which called also by other names as “Festival of the Sacrifice” or “feast of sacrifice”, is the second of two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year. It comes about 70 days after the first one called “Eid Elfethr”. It is considered the holier of the two festivals. It is a remembrance and an honor of the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience.

Eid al-Adha in the Philippines

When I first arrived to the Philippines, and settled in Manila with my Filipino wife and kids, few of Manila residents were awaire of Eid al-Adha day. That time it was not yet declared as a Holiday till it happens few years later.

As a Muslim non Filipino, I did not find it hard to enjoy celeberating the Eid. I just used to join Filipino Muslims where they celeberate. For me the mearst srea is Lunata Park, where all Muslims gather early at dawn for Eid prayer. The influx of Muslims to the park starts as early as 4 am where every thing is set for prayer and celeberation. After prayers. Celeberation continues during the day. Some families got to Manila zoo. Recently it is closed noe for renovstion, so it is not an optio till it will reopen. Others head to Mall of Asia which is 10 t 15 minutes far using a car.

Actually the celeberation is huge. Eid al-Adha now is regular holiday, so all Filipinos and expats – Muslims and others – enjoy the holiday. You see the mall are crowded as in Chrismas times.

There many other dedtinations in Manilato spend and enjoy your Eid al-Adha holiday.

Hope you share your suggestion, where to spend Eid al-Adha holiday. Drop a comment below for your opinion.
