Transport Nationwide strike with suspension of work for 2 days

Manila 17 Oc 2017: Activists and jeepney drivers hold banners during a jeepney transport nationwide strike held in Manila. That nationwide strike started yesterday October 16, 2017.  The nationwide transport strike was held in protest against the government’s plan to phase out the jeepney. The government as part of a modernization of the Philippines started a compain to replace  the jeepney .

The suspension of government and schools extended for 2 days. The suspension of classes and government work for the second straight day was due to the stoppage of operations of thousands of jeepney drivers. transport nationwide strike resulting suspension covers public and private schools.

The government would continue the jeepney modernization program despite the strong opposition of groups behind  transport nationwide strike, Malacañang said, “There were several attempts in the past to modernize the public transport system but these have been thwarted due to similar transport strikes, which unfortunately resulted in an outdated public transport system”.
